  • Jerky Treats to AVOID

Jerky treats are one of my favorite treats to give to dogs but I only trust a few brands since the deaths of so many dogs eating jerky treats. Two of my favorite ways to give to dogs is by freezing a jerky strip in a large of of water to make an ice treat, and stuffing a jerky strip inside a Qwizl. I will also place the stuffed Qwizl in a cup and fill with water to freeze to make an ice treat.

Fortuitously my dogs did not die or become ill like thousands of other dogs did after eating jerky treats made for dogs. Unknown to me at the time in 2007 the FDA had been investigating animal illnesses linked to jerky pet treats. “Since 2007, the agency has received about 5,300 reports of illnesses associated with pet treats made of chicken, duck, or sweet potatoes.” The majority of complaints involve chicken jerky (treats, tenders, and strips), but others include duck, sweet potato, and treats where chicken or duck jerky is wrapped around dried fruits, sweet potatoes, yams, or rawhide.” “The reports involve more than 6,200 dogs, 26 cats, three people, and include more than 1,140 canine deaths.”

Pet treats remain source of illnesses

“Dr. Steven Solomon told the audience at AAFCO that FDA considers the Chinese Jerky Treat investigation “resolved“. Over, done, no more investigation. Thousands of pets died, FDA couldn’t find the cause – so they are just going to stop looking and call it “resolved“. But the thing is, its NOT resolved. Dr. Solomon admitted the agency is still receiving a few complaints of sick or dead pets linked to the treats.”

Since many but not all of the ingredients of the jerky treats in question were made or sourced from China I now look for dogs treats that are sourced and made in the USA. One challenge we consumers face is that manufacturers are not required to list the country of orgin for ingredients used in their products.

When looking for a jerky or any type of dog treat i avoid the following ingredients:
